Job Summary:

The CSUSB Basic Needs & Student Support serves as a one-stop wellness hub with two service area locations where students can access basic needs services, complete basic needs intake, and connect to housing, food, financial, and other essential resources both on and off-campus. We serve as a wellness hub where students can meet with a Wellness Ambassador to receive personalized support for their basic needs.

Programming in the BNs & Student Support center will address basic needs intake sessions, educational literacy, CalFresh application assistance, swipe out assistance, BNs grant request assistance, housing intake, trauma-informed and financial literacy and much more. Our students' well-being impacts their basic needs being addressed, sense of belonging, persistence, graduation rate, and overall experience. This is an exciting time to be a part of the Basic Needs & Student Support Staff and an opportunity to join a team committed to supporting students in the university's Basic Needs & Student Support Center.

Who is a Wellness Ambassador? Represent a group of positive, enthusiastic and well-informed representatives of the student body who are interested supporting the daily operation of the Basic Needs & Student Support Center.

The Basic Needs & Student Support department is seeking an organized, motivated, and outgoing individual to support the daily operations of the Basic Needs & Student Support Center

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Compassionate Care

  •  Provide quality and consistent student-centered services to all students and provide additional resources and information to assist students in addressing their needs.
  • Maintain a caring, respectful, comfortable, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all student shoppers served in the Obershaw DEN and/or mobile pantry.
  • Maintain positive and professional working relationships with external agencies and the campus community including students, staff, and community members.
  • Present a professional appearance and positive attitude.

Operations

  • Maintain the daily operations of the mobile pantry, assists with mobile pantry opening and closing duties.
  • Maintain utilization records of shoppers in the Obershaw DEN and/or mobile pantry in the Athletic department including scanning IDs, processing donations, performing data entry.
  • Maintain food inventory, quality control, and rotation of food supply in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Keep space and storage area clean and organized, including wiping down shelving, and refrigerators, organizing stocking, and quality control.
  •  Support crowd control during busy times in the service area.
  • Track student usage and inventory management for reporting purposes.

Outreach 

  • Assess the needs of the students at large as it relates to programs and services.
  • Remain current and knowledgeable of services and resources available on and off campus, such as free food at upcoming events and programs.
  • Refer students to additional resources available through Basic & Needs & Student Support and the integrated Holistic Support.
  • Engage with students through in-person tabling and outreach events to promote department services, programs, and resources.
  • Provide basic needs resources and services offered to students which may include Basic Needs Grant Request, Swipe Out Hunger, CalFresh, incentive resources, and more.

Coaching

  • Guide and follow up with new and returning students on basic needs services or resources to successfully complete.
  • Refer students to additional resources available through the Basic & Needs & Student Support Center and the integrated Holistic Support General.
  • Attend staff meetings and all required training every 1st and 3rd Friday of every month.
  • Work on special projects as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience

  • Ability to learn and perform assigned work; follow oral instructions; work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and other students; communicate effectively with all levels; and read and write English at a level appropriate to the position.
  • Special Qualification: Admission or registration as a CSU student.
  • As a Bridge Student Assistant, the student need not be registered as a student, but must have been enrolled as a CSU student the previous term and is registered for the following term.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. or greater per semester and cumulative.
  • Students must be enrolled in at least halftime units at CSUSB (6 units undergraduate; 3 units graduate)
  • International students must have full-time enrollment at CSUSB. (12 units undergraduate; 6 units graduate)
  • Eligible to work in the United States
  • Payroll Requirement: Social Security Card

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Assume responsibility for understanding and learning about all basic needs services and program offered in the department.
  • Ability to provide friendly and pleasant student-oriented services and maintain a professional work conduct.
  • Ability to adhere to work agreements, follow routine verbal and written instructions, use time effectively and work productively with general supervision.
  • Ability to effectively communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to speak and write in a second language is a plus but not required.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Ability to multi-task and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse student population and campus community.
  • Must be safely able to stand, lift, and carry 25 lbs.

 

Compensation and Benefits:

Student Employment Anticipated Hiring Range: $16.00 per hour.

The compensation offered will consider internal equity and experience among other factors.

 

Position Information:

Work status: Part-Time, Temporary, Seasonal

Academic year available hours: Monday through Friday (8:30 am – 6:30 pm).

Summer available hours: Monday through Thursday (8:30 am - 6:30 pm).

This is an 'On-Campus Only' position. Student Employees are not eligible to telecommute at any time.

As of January 1, 2022, the CSU Out-of-State Employment Policy prohibits the hiring of employees to perform CSU-related work outside the state of California.

California State University, San Bernardino in not a sponsoring agency for staff or management positions (i.e. H1-B Visas).

 

Conditions of Employment

Background Check

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) may be required for student employment purposes. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.  Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check when required may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

 

Driver’s License Check

Possession of a valid Driver's License may be required.  Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.
